Our Approach
Given the property's significant shading from the surrounding redwood trees, we recommended a modest 4.5 kW solar system consisting of just 10 panels. The limited sunlight exposure would restrict solar production throughout the year, making a larger system less cost-effective. Since the client's primary priority was reliable whole-home backup power during frequent utility outages, we focused on integrating a Franklin aPower 2 battery. With the property's proximity to the Russian River and potential for flooding, we mounted the battery as high as permitted by applicable electrical and installation codes to help minimize exposure to rising floodwaters. This approach prioritized backup power reliability, safety, and long-term value over maximizing solar capacity.
Challenges
The biggest challenge of this installation was mounting the 360-pound Franklin aPower 2 battery at an elevated height to minimize potential flood exposure. Although our crew utilized a lift-assisted dolly, positioning and securing such a heavy battery required considerable physical effort, teamwork, and precision. Despite the challenges, our team successfully completed the installation while maintaining our commitment to safety, proper mounting, and long-term reliability.
